Slumdog Millionaire

The very name of the movie speaks loud of its theme and target

slumdog millionaire brings to our mind the slums, the people of slum areas but isin't it oxymoronic that a slum-dog can be a millionaire .

to me the very paradox of the title makes me inquisitive to see the film.

when one see this film one can only have an ambivalent outlook to the movie.

especially our indians because the backdrop of the story is india and many indians beleive that india has been dehumanised and degenerated.

people can see the disgrace with which the things have been portrayed in the film.

however its director DANNY BOYLE or certain individuals or even the actors of the film think that one cannot ignore or overlook the genius behind its making.

India has been taken as a background or setting to show what image west percieve of it and not simply to deteriorate its image .

but the truth is that the director has sharpened its nail on the iron tooth of racism.

nevertheless the story is not about the underdog or third world india or indians or a subordinate nation .

its about a young boy jamal malik who enters into a contest somehow to reach his lover latika and in the midst comes across plethora of questions which he answers out of sheer coincidence taking cue from his own life's experiences.

the host of the game show anil kapoor suspects the contestant , treats him with hostility, but the reality is that jamal is not faking or cheating and whatever he says is to be taken at its face value.

the way the two plots of the film have been connected and the manner in which the sub plots of the film like mafia in the mask of orphange and exploitation in the name of kindness have been delineated seems remarkable.

other than this the hindu-muslim riots seems stark reality .

to qoute amitabh bachchan:-"
if SM projects India as [a] third-world, dirty, underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations."

atlast the film by a westener danny boyle leave an indelible impact on our minds.worthy of oscars and awards slum dog millionaire is a social critique that lays bare the reality of slums by mixing it with some magic of "millions"
